Do you love your boobies? Today I loved mine by getting my annual mammogram. I’m not sure how long I’ve been getting mammograms, but since I’m now 55, I think it’s about 15 years… And I’m proud to say I’ve never missed a year! I have a vivid memory of my first mammogram: I fainted! Yes!!! I have a huge fear of medical procedures and have a history of fainting in doctor’s offices! The good news is that I now know enough to warn the offending parties (i.e., medical staff holding needles) before such procedures AND I can usually give a heads up if I feel a spell coming on. In the case of the mammogram faint, I was able to warn the technician so she caught me before I did a face plant. Fortunately, I wasn’t in mid scan and left dangling at the machine. OUCH! That’s not a pretty image!!!
In celebration of my annual booby check, I wanted to take this opportunity to share my experience and to encourage all women over 40 to MAKE AN APPOINTMENT ASAP if it’s been more than 12 months since you’ve had yours checked. Pick up that phone NOW!!!
This is not something you want to mess around with. Avoiding your annual mammogram is a stupid idea because breast cancer is very treatable if caught early. Sure it’s an uncomfortable procedure, but it’s nothing when compared to surgery or chemo treatments. I was in and out of today’s visit in less than 15 minutes, and that includes the time it took in the waiting room, getting undressed, and snapping a few pictures.
Thank you to Donna, the technician who so kindly and willingly took my pictures. (She thought it was cool that I was going to blog about my appointment.)
And in case you didn't know, you CAN smile while your booby is clamped down. (I figure if Katie Couric can get a colonoscopy on live TV, the least I can do is share a still pic on my mammogram procedure!)
