I had an amazing experience when I was in Mexico recently realizing bucket list item 4 - swimming with the dolphins! To be truthful, though, it was just one dolphin. But who cares! One was enough!!! It must have been fate because the place where you go for the dolphin “experience” or “encounter” as they call it was within walking distance of the resort we stayed in, and we walked by it every day as we meandered around the marina looking for places to eat & drink.
I actually first noticed the place, not while walking by it, but by seeing it from several stories up, from one of the rooftop balconies of our resort while doing a little self-guided tour. I looked down and saw this big blue pool of water and dolphins swimming around it. I think my reaction was something like: “OMG!!! Are those dolphins?!!! Are those dolphins I can swim with?!!! OMG! OMG!”
So of course, first chance I got, I went in and got the down low. I’m not sure there was any question whether I would do it or not. Price was not a concern. I was more worried they’d be booked up, but luckily, I had my choice of times.
I’ve wanted to swim with a dolphin as long as I can remember. I’m sure the movie The Day of the Dolphin had a huge influence on me as a young girl who adored all animals. It came out in 1973 when I was 14 years old. If you haven’t seen the movie, you must!
I have to say that the experience was incredible. I got to spend about 30 minutes in the pool sharing a dolphin with 7 other people. We all got individual time with the dolphin that included shaking her hands (fins), getting a kiss, giving a kiss, feeding her a fish, and then going for a dorsal fin ride across the pool.
I feel such a sense of accomplishment by checking off one of my bucket list items. You think of bucket list items as things that need a lot of planning, but this one just happened and it was so amazing. It motivates me to start thinking about the next item I want to check off… gorilla trekking perhaps?
