I've always been someone who has felt I needed makeup to enhance my looks. Call it a crutch perhaps but I would actually turn around and come home to put it on if I'd forgotten it. Lately I'm wearing it less. And my husband likes me without it which reinforces that it's my own issue. The funny thing is most people probably don't even know if I'm wearing it!!! Except the ones that are self conscious like me!!!
One thing I'm learning as I get older and am surrounded by positive, uplifting people is that what truly matters is on the inside. And the people that you should surround yourself with will look at your soul, not at the fancy decorations that cover it.
So yesterday AND today I've bared my soul and done without all those bells and whistles! Feels kind of freeing!

I came upon the Ted talk below and found it very interesting especially because the presenter, Emily Balcetis, used health and fitness as an example of where it can work against you. As a coach, I am always trying to find ways to motivate my customers so I am intrigued that a little alteration to how their mind is seeing things might be just the answer!
Emily talks about research that proves people who are more out-of-shape see exercise as more difficult while people who are in shape see it as easier. That makes sense! And she also says that the people who see exercise as more difficult also see the finish line as farther than people who are in shape. Again, that seems quite logical! But what’s really interesting is that when the out-of-shape people are asked to focus and keep their “eyes on the prize,” their mindset changes and they see the finish line closer.

Yesterday I turned a year older. And I’m ok with that. Not because I like aging but because, as I’m getting older, I truly believe I’m getting better. When I think about how to describe what I mean by being better, I come up with the following: I’m healthier. I’m physically stronger. I’m mentally stronger. I’m more energetic. I feel more loved. I feel more lovable. I feel more loving. I’m more sincere. I know more positive, uplifting people. I’m more optimistic. I’m more purposeful. I’m more passionate. I’m more committed. I’m more alive. And I’m happier!
These are only SOME of the reasons that, at age 56, I feel BETTER than EVER!!!

I had an amazing experience when I was in Mexico recently realizing bucket list item 4 - swimming with the dolphins! To be truthful, though, it was just one dolphin. But who cares! One was enough!!! It must have been fate because the place where you go for the dolphin “experience” or “encounter” as they call it was within walking distance of the resort we stayed in, and we walked by it every day as we meandered around the marina looking for places to eat & drink.
I actually first noticed the place, not while walking by it, but by seeing it from several stories up, from one of the rooftop balconies of our resort while doing a little self-guided tour. I looked down and saw this big blue pool of water and dolphins swimming around it. I think my reaction was something like: “OMG!!! Are those dolphins?!!! Are those dolphins I can swim with?!!! OMG! OMG!”
So of course, first chance I got, I went in and got the down low. I’m not sure...
Something new I started this year is My Happiness Jar. I got the idea from Elizabeth Gilbert, author of “Eat, Pray, and Love.” At the beginning of the year, she posted a picture of her jar on her Facebook page. She explained how every day she writes down on a slip of paper the happiest moment of the previous day, and then she drops it in her Happiness Jar. During the year, she collects 365 happy moments, and then at the end of the year, she reviews them all. How cool is that?!!! Little moments that might go forgotten are recorded and then saved so you can cherish them again!
She suggests you find an appropriate “vessel” for your happy notes. I didn’t spend too much time looking. I went with a big jar I found at Tuesday Morning, much like the one she showed in her photo. I set it on my dresser in my bedroom as a visual reminder to add a note in each day.

2014 was a great year for me so I spent a bit of time reflecting on why it was and what I learned last year that stands out as helping to make it one of my best years so far. I’m sure there are a lot of little things that I’ve probably forgotten, and there are, I’m thankful to say, the things that didn’t happen. Like none of my loved ones got really sick or laid off or were in an accident. Those things can really take the wind out of a great year.
So as I start this new year, I’m counting my blessings and looking back with a huge sense of gratitude for 12 months well-lived and certainly well-appreciated. Here are my 2014 lessons learned:

My eyebrow adventure began quite by accident. I came upon this idea after a woman walked into the salon where I was getting my hair done to get a 2nd opinion on her new tattoos. REALLY?!! You can tattoo your eyebrows?!! I had heard of having eyeliner tattoos but it never dawned on me that there might be an answer to my eyebrow-challenged life! Maybe I was living in a cave because, since then, several people have told me they’ve done it. Wow! I would have never known. And of course they have eyebrows to die for!
Some people might think it’s vain to get your eyebrows tattooed, but my feeling on the subject is that if it makes you feel better about yourself, then why not? For me, it’s also about saving time & money. No more spending 5 minutes applying eyebrow pencil and then another 5 minutes re-applying it because I didn’t get it on right. (This happens a lot when you have crooked eyebrows!) And no more money spent on Lancôme eyebrow pencil!...
Do you love your boobies? Today I loved mine by getting my annual mammogram. I’m not sure how long I’ve been getting mammograms, but since I’m now 55, I think it’s about 15 years… And I’m proud to say I’ve never missed a year! I have a vivid memory of my first mammogram: I fainted! Yes!!! I have a huge fear of medical procedures and have a history of fainting in doctor’s offices! The good news is that I now know enough to warn the offending parties (i.e., medical staff holding needles) before such procedures AND I can usually give a heads up if I feel a spell coming on. In the case of the mammogram faint, I was able to warn the technician so she caught me before I did a face plant. Fortunately, I wasn’t in mid scan and left dangling at the machine. OUCH! That’s not a pretty image!!!

One thing I love about having a blog is that I get to share cool things that I think will inspire and make a difference. I had an experience last week that fits the bill so I just have to share it. It’s about the journey of an unremarkable boy. My husband and I attended the dedication of the new Strome Business School and Entrepreneurial Center at our alma mater, Old Dominion University. We were invited by Mark Strome, who was my husband’s college roommate in the 70s, and his wife, Tammy. Mark had recently given the university a large financial gift.
It was super cool to be back at the place where we all met and began our friendships. Many of our college buddies were there as was Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and Virginia Senator Mark Warner, a good friend of Mark’s. We literally got the presidential treatment, watching an ODU football game from the President’s Suite in the company of the ODU President and his wife.
We were even treated to a halftime...
